Following the finish of the 5k, kids of all ages are invited to run in the Firecracker Kid's Run. Held at the start line of the 5k race, the Kid's Run splits kids into age groupings for short races of a few hundred yards, varied in distance according to age. There is no entry fee or need to register for the Firecracker Kid's Run...just show up when it is announced. All entrants will earn a finisher's ribbon for participating. Note: Participation is unlimited. Some older kids (of boundless energy) run both the 5k Run/Walk (requires official entry) and the Kid's Run.
Playground Partners Pancake Feed The Playground Partners — an organization devoted to purchasing and installing safe, up-to-date playground equipment in Sabetha — will be holding a Pancake Feed fundraiser the morning of the race. In October 2004, the organization installed its first playground, replacing the antiquated equipment in Sabetha's Library Park. The group continues to install equipment at other sites, including the 6th Street Park and at the North Ballfield Complex. Any extra proceeds from the race will go to the Playground Partners. (Taking into account donations from the first three years of the race, plus the Pancake Feed, RunSabetha has donated $7,600+ to the Playground Partners organization.) Note: The Playground Partners Pancake Feed is not directly affiliated with the 5k run/walk. Please support this group by contributing to the free-will donation. The event will start and finish at Leman Recreation Complex (city swimming pool). The 5-kilometer (3.1-mile) course winds through the streets of Sabetha, running through residential areas and past local landmarks, including the Sabetha Hospital addition and the Veteran’s Memorial and Fountain. Water will be available on the course. For safety reasons, rollerblades, skateboards, bicycles, scooters, etc. will not be allowed on the course. Strollers are allowed and encouraged — please start in the back to avoid the congestion at the beginning of the race. Note: Young children are welcome to walk along or ride in a stroller. Only those paying entry fees will receive a t-shirt and be included in the final results. Additional t-shirts are available for purchase ($10). Every participant registered by the early entry deadline is guaranteed to receive a t-shirt. Also, additional t-shirts are available for purchase and can be ordered when registering. Post-Race Celebration and Awards All participants are invited to enjoy post-race snacks and beverages, provided by our sponsors. An awards ceremony will be held after the event to recognize the top finishers in the race. Hang around for random prize drawings, courtesy of local sponsors. Official results will be available on this site in the days following the race. The average temperature for July in Sabetha in 77 degrees F, though it can get a lot warmer over the Independence Day Weekend. Extreme heat and humidity can pose a risk to your health. If conditions are hot, be prepared to scale back your race goals and make sure to consume plenty of fluids.
Maps and Driving Directions: Sabetha is located in Northeast Kansas, approximately 60 miles north of Topeka, 60 miles west of St. Joseph, and 7 miles south of the Nebraska border. It is about 100 miles from the Kansas City International Airport. It sits on Highway 75, about 4 miles north of Highway 36. The race will start and finish at Leman Recreation Complex (near the city swimming pool and Sabetha Middle School on BlueJay Boulevard). Parking will be available in the Middle School and High School parking lots. For safety reasons, please enter at the High School entrance gate.
